The cultural project / Lapis Domum
-
THE RESEARCH PROJECT “Lapis Aedificii – Lapis Domum: Following the Architecture Carved in Stone, through the Land of Luana” will be carried out between 2020 and 2023 in Romania, specifically in the Buzau-Fagaras-Brasov-Arges regions. The project will be organised by the Culture Reserve NGO and funded by the Romanian Order of Architects Architecture Stamp, with the support of the infrastructure partner, the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest, and the Romanian Orthodox Church. The project’s subject of study will be the rock architecture of UNESCO sites, wherein the research team seeks to employ a documentary and inventory analysis, as well as architectural education. The project’s main objective is to conduct a detailed analysis of the existing rock architectural heritage in the geopark region of Buzau – a UNESCO site – specifically the Bozioru (Nucu) – Braesti (Ruginoasa) – Colti (Alunis), Sinca Veche (Brasov-Fagaras), Namaiesti, Corbii de Piatra, and Cetatuia Neagra Voda areas. The project aims to reposition and recognize the architectural and heritage value of rock architecture in Romania, with a focus on using educational methods as an academic tool in the field of architecture.
-
The existing rock architectural heritage in Romania is relatively unknown internationally. Its value lies mainly in its historical significance, given its age. The overall value of these objectives rests in the singularity of this architectural typology within the country (alongside the Basarabi ensemble) and its relationship with other internationally recognized sites, such as those in Cappadocia (Turkey), Matera (Southern Italy), Sardinia, and other rock-carved architectural sites from the 4th to 8th century AD.The research project consists of three phases: a research and inventory project (initiated in 2008), an in situ workshop for identifying relevant rock architecture (September 2022), and a post-workshop research project that was funded by the Romanian Order of Architects Architecture Stamp and supported by the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest, alongside the Romanian Orthodox Church. The project inventory refers to the examination of seven objectives, 670 km of area, 60 hours of in situ investigation, photographic inventory, and classic methods of identification, as well as 80 hours of drawing, approximately 528 hours of gypsum modelling, and 32 scale models.
-
There are two distinct stages to this project. The research phase (first stage: 2020-2023) aims to analyse the spatial morphology, identify the specific features of ad invertum architecture, interpret the excavated architectural design from the perspective of mimetic architecture, and focus on investigative techniques. The workshop and model research have been developed as an application to add value to the innovative vision of architectural heritage and to analyse the use of investigative techniques. The primary objectives of the project are to identify and understand these architectural objectives, open a particular non-formal educational path for young architects by studying mimetic architecture, and to promote and reaffirm the value of these excavated stone architectural objectives in Romania. The project emphasises the analysis of mimetic architecture, particularly its inherent conceptual and perceptual perception, which has decisively influenced architectural form. The project will go beyond the analysis of heritage value, by moving into the sphere of recognizing and analysing comparative architectural elements and their relevance to architectural education. It is a pioneering study in the field of excavated stone architecture, and the application has the potential to lead to the development of specific educational programs for young architects.
